bg cut anyone off, normaly not over winter though. Although nothing stopping them going on warrant with a pre-pay0

They will cut off your gas supply, because then you still have the 'option' of electric heating.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Fuel Direct http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/ManagingDebt/DebtsAndArrears/DG_10025592 may be your best bet (unless you can get a grant). It doesn't have the same possibility of the supply going off if you can't top up that a pre payment meter does.
With children in the house & in the middle of winter they should not disconnect your supply if you make such arrangements.
