Quick AMMONIA & OVEN HELP!

Hi there
just a flying visit again, but I know last week someone told me to get some ammonia for doing my oven shelves. Well I ve found some in boots, and Im ready to go

Am I right I put them in a bin bag?

How much ammonia do I use- do i tip the bottle of ammonia in the bag? Or what?

Guidance please!!!!

Cheers :D

How big is the bottle? I would just tip it in, tie the top securely & lay it down outside.
I would definately take lots of safety precautions - apron, rubber gloves, old clothes etc.
For a "belt & braces" approach use 2 bin bags - one inside the other, then if one breaks you're safe. Put the oven shelves in first, then the ammonia.
Be careful when you open it up again.
  • When I did it I put about a cupful into the bin liner. I put the oven shelves and anything else I could remove from the oven into a double bin liner and then added the amonia. I did the bag up with a rubber band and left it overnight. I was amazed just how easily the gunk wiped off everything in the morning. That reminds me it must nearly be time to do it again.

I would leave this overnight - do not do what I did - do not breath in!!!!!Keep it well away from bleach as it becomes a poisonous gas if they are mixed together. (Not joking!)It cleaned up some really awful oven shelves and racks.

Lynzpower, I was shocked that someone told you to tip the whole bottle in - it is really caustic stuff. Next time a cupful is fine. Empty the bag tomorrow and avert your eyes- do an Anthea Turner and use some knickers to coveer your mouth and nose. Once the bag is drained, hose it down and you will see some gleaming results. Any stubborn bits will sluice off with a barbecue brush. HTH

i just cannot visualise Anthea with knickers on her head.

Yes, I did get the feeling it was pretty noxious I can smell it on my hands, even thoguh I didnt get it on me at all.

    Heres the thing.

How do I remove the sleves from the bag? With gloves I take it- and where can I rinse them will they be OK in the kitchen sink?

And what about the bag with the rest of the ammonia in? Or will it evaporate? I was going to put it in a bucket then tip the bag & contents in the communal bins, but Im scared for the bin men.

Ive got no grid, and no hose?

What I would suggest is to tip it out onto your patio- averting your eyes-you could use disposable gloves( you can always pick up a pair at some petrol stations- and then chuck a bucket over the trays etc. Even if there isnt a drain, it will dry up.. I take it you havent got a garden or are you in a flat. Once the shelves etc have been` rinsed` you can then use your sink to finish them off. ( next time 1 cup ammonia ONLY!)

Have you any weeds to get rid of?

You could empty it on them. As long as children or animals do not go near.
