Alternative treatments for dog with arthritis

Been told by the vets my dog requires drugs to stop problems with arthritis works out at £50 per month very expensive.
Currently giving my dog cod liver oil, glucosamine, which is working quite well thinking of getting a magnetic dog collar which some people say may help cost
about £30.
Total saving so far about £450 any other ideas please.

Can't speak from experience but I have heard 'miracle' stories with giving dogs acupuncture for arthritis. Not sure it's going to save you much as any treatment is obviously going to cost, sorry!
  • Hi,

I don't know of any alternatives other than the ones that you are already using, but something that made our dogs life a bit better when she had arthritis was a little table we made out of wood to put her food and water bowls on. The arthritis affected her neck and this meant she didn't have to bend her neck to eat and drink. I guess this only makes a difference if you've got a relatively big dog - ours was a border collie.

Good luck and i hope you are successful in finding an alternative!
  • Just found this website - haven't looked at it properly but it way have some options The Pet Arthritis Resource

Hope the link works - I haven't done one before!
  • I would deffinately recommend the magnetic collar. I had a back problem, and was sceptical about a magnetic bracelet, until I found one in a pound shop. I never looked back. Dogs don't let scepticism spoil the effects of alternative medicine, and also for this reason I would suggest homeopathy.

It's worthwhile finding a homeopathic vet at first, to get the prescription right, then afterwards order directly from a homeopathic pharmacy. We did this with our ancient Jack Russell, who we eventually lost at aged almost 19. The use of a pharmacy saves loads, and you can order through the post. I have found http://www.caninenaturalcures.co.uk/ very very helpful in the past and http://www.ainsworths.com/company/contact.aspx pharmacy very reasonable ( around £10 for 3 month's supply) once you have the prescription
"Excuse me, this expires today, will you be reducing it?"
