How can I shred without having an accident?

Has anyone worked out a foolproof way of shredding cheque book stubs without resorting to the first aid kit?
The staple on those cheque books (for 30 or 50 cheques) are lethal. Even tried using the heavy duty shredder at work - which can cope with CDs, pepr clips, stacks of paper - but no luck!
The question is :
(a) Remove staples first and then shred?
or
(b) Shred straight away and deal with the staples at an appropriate point?
I've got holes in the tips of my fingers and gouges in my nails - and need a solution. _pale_

Just soak them in water for a few days. They become unreadable and can be "mashed" to make doubly sure.0

And then you can get the kids to make papier mache animals out of them.
