Sold Sealed dvd which doesn't work

Options
Hi,

I sold a brand new and sealed blu ray dvd 2 weeks ago, the person I sold it to has just messaged me to say that disc one doesn't work and only disc two and that they are giving me a chance to resolve it before they report it to ebay. Where do I stand with this? It was sold still sealed so I wouldn't know if it worked or not. I'm worried they might be trying to con me, would the best option be to ask them to send it back then refund their money?

I had this when I sold a 'Neverwhere' DVD and although it was on Amazon I asked buyer to return it and refunded them and when I tried the disc it actually didn't work. The odd thing was that the shop replaced it and the replacement disc failed to work as well.

Anyway, that's immaterial, realistically all you can do is ask buyer to send it back and once you get it back refund them.

  • Given you both had problems then I suspect there may be a workaround.

Google something like "blu ray disk does not play".

I know nothing about this and did not look at any results but I did see the words firmware update appear on my screen so the buyer may just need to update his player firmware.
  • I offered the buyer a refund if they returned the dvd minus postage costs. However they are still going to ebay. They said it wasn't fair I wasn't covering both lots postage.
It was a 2 disc dvd apparantly the 2nd one worked but not the 1st. Can anyone let me know what will happen when they go to ebay? i've never had any problems before, and am worried about my feedback etc.

ask them to return it to you which youll refund the item and cost, if its faulty youll refund the return postage too.why did they leave it so long to report it?

If they go to eBay, they will get their entire original payment back, but not their return costs.

You will have to refund them and you will get a black mark against your account.

Personally I think if the disc is faulty you should offer them return postage. You are responsible for what you sell, even if it isn't actually your fault. Part of this responsibility is to make sure the buyer is not out of pocket if their item has a fault.

I would imagine (a) they put it aside to watch later on; and (b) they had to watch the disc for a while before it went funny. It's immaterial really since a dispute can be raised up until 45 days after purchase, and tbh some of the DVDs I've bought on eBay recently are piling up still to be watched, so it's not a giant leap of faith to suppose this is what has happened. Business sellers are responsible for faults arising six months after purchase that could not have arisen through buyer mishandling - to cover just this kind of eventuality.

Because it took them a couple of weeks to get around to watching it perhaps?

I have DVD's sat around here that I bought months ago and still haven't gotten around to watching, and once in a while a faulty disc does turn up, even with sealed discs, so it's entirely plausible that the buyer is telling the truth.
