My tree has a name!

Posting just before I start my marmalade as I am off this week clawing back the day's off that I had to have back as I was rushed into the local hospital and was really poorly. Anyway, went to an Apple Day yesterday to identify the apple tree in the back garden. Found out it's a Monarch - variety from 1888 - and was planted a lot in cottage gardens in WWII as they are bakers (true) which don't require much sugar (true) and would be " a good buy" with a sugar ration to think of. So, even my apple tree is Old Style!!!! Actually it was quite poignant as we found out yesterday which was the 10th anniversary of my Mum's death and she always wanted to know what the tree was (I live in the house I grew up in).
But I'm going to say this once, and once only, Gene. Stay out of Camberwick Green :D

Thats so nice - like your Mum was giving you a present (thats how I view things like that anyway).

We have got a couple of Apple trees, a pear tree and a plum tree in our garden too. Not sure on varieties either.

Rage - how lovely to see you! :T :T Oh dear, sorry to hear you have been poorly (((Hugs))) Hope you are all recovered (sounds like quite a fright for you).

How wonderful to finally solve the mystery of your apple tree - bonus to find it's an OS tree too :D :T

Be interesting to see if that variety is still available these days - if not, I'll pop up for a cutting ;):D

When I read the thread title I thought you meant it had a name like, 'Fred the apple tree' :o

  • Well, now that it has been revealed as such a regal variety I think it should have a nice regal name....... How about Edward? "Edward the Ever-abundant Apple Tree" - sounds like a story Kenneth Williams should have been on Jackanory with!!!:D

Thanks for the hugs QUeenie - since the end of July I've hardly been in work (and I only started in February). First the ikea bookcase fell on my head - :rotfl: - giving me quite serious concussion (at one point they thought I was developing a sub-dural haematoma) and then I'm just ready to go back and I'm rushed in the local hospital with a full casulty/holby city episode routine with a very severe infection of my gall bladder which had spread into my intestines and was toying with invading my liver. A week on IV antibiotics and then another week taking foul tasting ones (I would be allergic to penicillin...) and then off (I can highly recommend the double acting Morphine and Co-codamol). I'm going to have to have my gall bladder out though as they reckon it was such a severe infection this time that next time it will probably make it into my liver so best err on the side of caution. So that will be another 6 weeks off. So I am off this week to try and get a head start on anything Christmas related (already started my present shopping/making) as I have said I will take a cancellation for my op date. I'll keep you all posted but as it stands I am not allowed cheese or anything else "fatty" - oh the despair of no cheese on toast......
