If you choose to do a runner you can't give a previous address where you were on the electoral roll. This is becoming increasingly important as anyone who gives credit, which includes utility companies, will need to confirm your identity. Also, don't get divorced. Ex wifes/husbands love grassing you up.

Then after 6 years you can't be chased for the debt but could be prosecuted for fraud if you took out credit intending to run and then they find you (although this is extremely rare it does happen).

seems a bit dodgy to me, a pc isn't a cheap purchase, and most people remember how many they've had, surely they would know if they brought one around that time, if they can't remember chances are they didn't. Also would you not remember seeing one there? Perhaps someone has managed to get a pc on finance using their details? Deny deny deny, get advice and don't pay anything until you are sure that it is their debt, adn anyway if they can't enforce it it shouldn't go any further.

They can't recollect at all...I typed them up a draft copy of Clapton's recommendations letter and they are in the process of sending it to them and defending the debt
