energy saving plug - clicking noises

Hi,
I got the free £20 plug, which is great because it's hard to persuade the family to turn the TV etc. off at the wall.
unfortunately, it keeps causing an intermittent click whenever we're watching TV. It sounds like something actually switching on or off - it's quite a loud noise.
I've tried switching the VCR, DVD, etc. off, but it still continues.
Has anyone else had this? Do you know what it might be?
Cheers,
Kay
