Wierd tax code!

Hey guys - wonder if anyone can help as I've serached the web and drawn a blank - hope I'm not being too thick!

My tax code looks pretty normal at first glance, it's "647L/0".

Having read on the main site about tax codes it's the "/0" bit that's confusing me! From what I understand "647L" is a normal tax code for someone with my income / age etc, so what's that extra suffix all about?

Hope that someone can put my mind at rest!

  • It probably means cumulative basis, but ask your payroll dept for clarification.

If you're reading that from an employer's computerised document (payslip / P60)?

The '0' is in the place the '1' would appear if you were on Month 1 or Week 1. As you're not on either ............. they've chosen to fill that character area with a '0' instead of the less confusing 'space' character? In essence ...... you're on the standard 647L. They've just chosen to add a bit of confusion.

  • HI Can anyone help?
My mum is 72yrs and she has 2 tax codes is this right am wondering if she's got one of these incorrect codes? She's got 2 tax letters both dated the same date earlier on this year one with a code of BR for her additional pension which is only £198 per year and code 331P for her state and teachers pension?

That's fine - it's a 2nd income and BR is the normal tax code for this.
and code 331P for her state and teachers pension?

    Sounds perfectly correct as well.

£9490 for personal allowamce minus £6175 deduction for state pension. Assuming that is roughly her state pension she has nothing to worry about.

Thanks, yes it is a computer printed payslip - hopefully your right as that seems to be the simplest answer!

Thanks Gertie - but what does "cumulative basis" mean? I will give payroll a ring and see if this is what it refers to!
  • Cumulative means that your employer is taking all your income and tax paid in this tax year into account when calculating your weekly or monthly pay. Means that at the end of the year, your tax will be correct.

I do 'simple' ...... but I've seen that before, so fairly confident.
