Are Harrods Brand Goods any better than 'normal' brands?

I am looking to put together a hamper for someone really special. I have looked on the Harrods website, but just wondered, if Harrods things-say there tin of dolly mixtures,or chocolates, or champagne, are any better/different to anyone elses?
And also, just wondered who actually makes them? Is there a Harrods Food Factory somewhere??

  • I don't think there's a Harrods food factory, at least not for dolly mixtures etc, it wouldn't be economic to run a factory production line for such a small run; they will be produced to Harrod's specification by other manufacturers (like all the supermarket own brand stuff).

It's probably very nice stuff but whether it's worth having the Harrod's brand on compared to any other premium brand, I couldn't say. I suspect not. I think I'd rather have a bigger hamper of M&S or Tesco Finest etc instead.

I think they use the same factory as most supermarkets, sweets and chocolates taste no different from any other luxury box of chocolates, it does look nice in a hamper to have the harrods brand name on the produce. when i make a hamper I buy a few brand names from several well know stores :)

I have never heard of Harrods food being spoken of especially highly, yet M&S food seems to set the bar for food standards in most peoples minds.

Save the cash, go to M&S, every alternative I have had from there is much better then other store comparisons, even things like fruit and tinned soup just somehow tastes much better! Not sure how they do it!

I know someone who works in food production and they said that Aldi are more strict than Marks and Spencer on quality.

You're buying into the premium name of the brand which is renowned for quality throughout the world. Harrods, like all premium brands, guard their reputation with care and only sell quality things.

Have you been into the shop?
  • Am thinking that with food, fortnum and mason may be a better choice.

You would be better off going with M&S branded foods, they are just as highly rated and, more often than not, better quality than Harrod's brands, I know from experience.

OOh, thanks for so many replies. So Harrods is just somebody elses stuff repackaged then. Thats interesting. Sounds like marks seem to be getting the thumbs up generally, so may use their stuff.
