Shortfall in National Insurance Contributions

I was told this too when I asked for a forecast about 10 days ago. The guy was very helpful and said as long as you have asked for it before the deadline all is well.
make a nice change if something to do with Government works well:rotfl:0 -
I received a letter in December 08 saying there was a gap in my NI contribution for year 2006-07.
I now see changes have started today, the rates & years you can make-up any gap.
When I phoned NI Contributions Office today, they said you can now only go back to 2003. Up to yesterday you could go back to 1996.
The annoying thing is, all it said in the letter was "it may cost you more if you pay after 5 April 2009". When I checked today, the amount I would need to pay for 2006/07 had increased by 60% on the amount stated in Dec 08 letter.
I haven't checked anything until today, when the rules changed.
Would the letter I received in Dec. 2008 have mentioned other years if there was a gap in NI contributions, as it only mentioned that 1 year ??

Peter999:
According to HMRC you can still pay at the original rates for 2006/2007 until 5 April 2013 assuming you reach SPA after 6 April 2010. Do you reach SPA after 6 April 2010? I've always been a bit dubious about the HMRC note but it says it in black and white.
See the paragraph about 4 headings down at
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/payinghmrc/class3nics.htm#1
“Voluntary Class 2 or Class 3 National Insurance contributions for the tax year 2006-07
If you reach State Pension age on or after 6 April 2010 and want to pay voluntary Class 2 or Class 3 National Insurance contributions for the 2006-07 tax year, you can do so at the original rates up to and including the final date for payment of 5 April 2013.”
If you reach SPA after 6 April 2010, and want to buy a 2006/2007 tax year credit, I would be printing that page off their website right now (before they take it down) and enclosing a cheque based on the older rate with a copy of that page.
I would phone the Pensions Service to find out what exact years you have credits for also and which years are missing. That is the simplest way to answer your other question.I came, I saw, I melted0 -
...you can do so at the original rates up to and including the final date for payment of 5 April 2013.”
Good you have pointed it out as it is very specific & in B+W.
There could be a hiccup somewhere.
I'll investigate.

Listening to Radio 4 money box live today. For those who could not log in to the pension forecast site ( they were having problems) to make NI conts. before the 6th of April at the original price, They have now extended the deadline at that price for a month from when you are able to get your new forecast so you will have to act fast. Hope this makes sense, Go to radio 4 to get the details of the programme.0

I tried to get a forecast last year but was unable to as they were revamping the computer system. Now I find that the cost of any supplemental NI contributions is to double (approx) w.e.f April 6th. Is it just me? There hasn't been much publicity about this!! I tried to register for the online forecasting last week and unlike most other online activities, they send out your activation code by snail mail - which can take a week. Finally I got it but of course their online forecasting is currently down due to their being flooded out with enquiries. After trying both online and telephone I finally spoke to a real person today and it seems it will take 10 days to get a pension forecast to me. By which time I will of course have missed the deadline to pay for any gaps at the current rate. Hey ho what a surprise. It's April Fools Day and this lot certainly are a joke.
have a read of my last post, you may still be able to buy at the old price, they have extended the deadline for a month because of that trouble logging in,
when did you try to get in and couldn't?0 -

I'd assume that it'll be nigh on impossible to access that: they'll bury it in logistics so that they don't lose out of their own mistake... typical English government process!Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature.
