I am not bothered about HD if this will make it cheaper.

If you are willing to spend over £700 for a crappy plasma why not spend a bit more for the best screen in the £1000-£2500 price bracket.
The Panasonic TH42PX60 is close to £1000 if bought from Currys with the relevant codes applied. The Panasonic screens are highly rated although personally I don't like the silver surround.
