Acoustic, everytime.

Once you master acoustic then you play electric like a legend!
Master electric and you still sound like a ham fisted retard on acoustic

personally i prefer my acoustic but i know people who dont. It's an ok deal but you can get some half decent guitars for not loads to start on and then if they take to it you can always buy them a better one as a later birthday or xmas gift. They make good milestone one and i love my acoustic i got for my 18th
