Knitting help please? Starting a new row in a different colour

A plea for help please :D

I am trying to knit ds a really bold Dennis the Menace scarf (red and black stripes), when it is time to start a new colour I can't get the colours to blend properly without 1 row having a mix of colours and it looks a bit messy. Is there a way to blend different colours effectively so I can keep the 2 colours very seperate (a la Dennis the Menace style).

Sorry I know I am perhaps not explaining myself properly but it is really hard to explain without being able to show somebody, I hope somebody might understand and can give me some pointers/advice?

Thanks very much :)

As far as I know there will always be one row, where the top of the stitch is one colour and the bottom another, but this will only be visible on one side of the knitting, and the trick therefore is to make sure that you always change colours so that this row is on the same side. If you want to have a scarf that looks perfect on both sides the only way I know to do it is to make it twice as wide as you need, then fold in half lengthwise and stitch closed with the wrong side encased inside, and the good side on display to the outside world.

I have a friend who taught herself to knit, and has never used the 'proper' technique for joining in a new colour, but knots the new yarn, and when the knitting is finished she weaves the loose ends in to the matching colour.

You don't have to have a row with a mixture... I will try and explain but not sure how it will come out...

When you get to the end of the black row (for example) cut the wool off so it has a bit of an end on it (approx 30cm or so) then take the red and leaving a similar length hanging just start knitting with the new colour. You will probably have to grip the loose ends with your third hand :D for a few stitches but just start knitting. When you get to the end of that row go back and just tie a knot with the two loose ends and pull it up to the edge of the scarf.

Bob's your uncle, no "merging" row just a neat switch from one colour to another... :j :j :j

    Hope that makes sense!
