Does tax-free income count against income threshold for paying off Student Loans?

For example income from ISAs, NS&I certificates or rent a room scheme? None of which you have to mention on your tax form.

Comments

  • I would say yes after all it is income; which should be added up to form your total income for the year.
I know you do not pay tax on ISA income and rent a room scheme etc but that is different to what you ask.

To get the definitive answer you need to ask HMRC.

if you are on PAYE then you can in any event have up to 2,000 pa in interest before having to complete a self assessment form and pay extra SL contributions
    see http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/students/repay_loan_through_sa_6_3.htm

I would assume (but don't know for sure) that as the self assessment forms don't require you to give details of ISAs etc then you would not need to pay extra SLC contributions

It doesn't make any difference if the interest is taxable or not, if it's over £2000 then it's taken into account. Whether or not it appears on your tax return (if you have to complete one) is irrelevant. See Student Loan Co guide to repaying student loan.
