university grants and savings?

Hi,

I would be very grateful if someone could tell me what grants are available for university students and what ranges of incomes do parents need to fall within? also as I believe its means tested is it just the interest on savings that count towards the means test as well as the other standard income?

many thanks

  • Hi

Below is a reply i had previously posted as a reply in student forum and i have just copied and pasted. This was in relation to 2010/11 academic year.

All students can apply for Maintenance Loan (Non-means Tested) and Tuition Fee Loan regardless of parents income.

There is also an additonal part of the Maintenance Loan that is Means Tested but you need to give income details to be assessed if eligible for this part of the Loan.

With regard to grants below is the income levels to receive any of the Maintenance Grant.

£19,203 or less you get Full grant (£3475)
Between £19,204 and £41,065 Partial grant
    Over £41,065 No grant

Between £41065 and £53035 you will still get some of the Means Tested loan. It is only when your income goes over £53035 that it is not worth your while filling in the income sections as you will only receive the non means tested loan.

If your joint income is under £41065 then student may get some of the grant. If it is between £41065 and £53035 student may get more loan also. The student finance ni website has a calculator where you can enter your income and it will give you a rough idea of what support you might receive.

Also if you have other children either in school or at university make sure you put their details on the form as this can reduce down the income as an allowance is made for each other member of the family still in education.

With regard to savings it is only the amount of interest on saviings that you need to put on the form and this is what is taken in as income not the actual savings amount.

    Hope this helps
