Unpaid inductions/ training periods

This is not for me but I am curious, somebody on another forum I visit has got a new job but has been told they have to do a week unpaid training. I am wondering if this is legal- I know there are a few HR/ employment law bods on here I have tried google and can't find anything.

If they accepted the job under those conditions then the only think I can think of is minimum wage might apply.

If the training is given BEFORE the job starts that might not apply.

One the job starts on agreed terms then they should pay the wages.
