electric underfloor heating

Options
Hi all
(hopefully this is in the right place)

Right il start from having a £600 bill drop through my letterbox, this was a bill for a quarter period.

I have phoned the electric company and gave them my readings again and this time it has amounted to £133.25 in two weeks!!

bear in mind i am very good with lights(7w energy savers all round)and i make sure non are on unless im using them.
I watch the appliance usage closly and i have double glazing all round and do EVERYTHING possible to conserve asmuch as possible!

I have underfloor heating and a nibe 360p boiler but i couldnt tell you if its wet or dry systems!

The problem i have is the system keeps having faults and has done so since i moved in despite the regular visits from techys to 'fix' it!
It last from 30mins/4hrs/24hrs/48hrs etc)but never very long!

The whole house is electric run(no gas at all on the island) and during the faults the system has been running in overdrive(as i call it)as it uses the immersion systems to balance it out when its out of sync(displaying its usual error message)(LP alarm/hw temp sensor)

The last guy replaced the temp sensor but this didnt seem to do any more than usual as its off AGAIN!!

I have a smart meter and its sync to google meter and you can clearly see the boilers usage in the tall and distinctive spikes lasting 40mins plus and every 30/60 min it produces this!

It is also clear that while it was running without fault the energy was high but clearly a differant graph picture than when its offline(error)

I have put up with this system for too long now and just its warmup is long and unwantedly expensive and yes it does level out when complete but still expensive(records taken with fridge freezer/computer(for meter updating)and no lights/no kettle no nothing!

Then its only the boiler thats on other than the above appliances !

i can clearly see what im using but depite using wisly the boiler is far to greedy!!

wether on or in error mode this boiler is killing us (expenses wise)and being on benefits this is not the kind of problems i need!

i am hoping to produce and present the data to the housing assoc and hopefully get help from them with the bills.

I dont expect free heat/water but this kind of cost i can do without!!!

has anyone have any advice i can take and see what other areas i can cover as i cannot afford £833.25 and according to the supplier im using £8 per day or there abouts and i have worked out i am using 40% and boiler 60%(like i said i dont expect free but this is high)

I HATE THIS HEATING SYSTEM and my kids are suffering from my stress of proving i am not using a stupid amount compared to the boiler and this has ment running the house on a skeleton crew on appliances (not that i use allot anyway)

kids and wanting to watch their dvds at night:)

You appear to be using on average 3kWh every hour, 24 hours a day.
That's going somewhere, and if it's not light or noise, it must be heat.

The HA is only obligated to provide you with an adequate form of heating, not one that you can necessarily afford.

Just turn the whole system off. Use the immersion an hour a day to give you some hot water if you want.
Think about putting on a second jumper (as that famous energy boss said).
If you really need some extra heat (and you may do so in the coming week) get yourself down to somehere like Wilko's and pick up a heater for about £10-£20 :)
But use it sparingly, not 24/7.

  • apparently we cannot turn it off as the system will freeze?

The 3kwh is lower than we are using and il know more i about 24hrs

according to the meter(my smart meter)we have used 27kwh since 12midnight lastnight till now!!(17:30)

is that bad?as it seems bad and you wouldnt believe what i havnt got on!

apparently 14kwh yestarday when the system was ON and not in error mode!

Hi, I have same problem, my new built house is costing me a fortune and I am getting no heat, all houses that were built on this new estate have had problems with cost and heating from the nibe 360 heating, I really dont like paying for heating when I dont get any heat, plus, the hot water runs brown, I have tried all settings, summer, spring/autum, and winter, still expensive and no heat, i am monitoring the usage with an electricity monitor which monitors usage of just the heating and it tells me i am using 6.79 kwh constantly, is this a lot of energy to run just the nibe heating, it cannot be turned off and i have asked for it to be checked and was told it is designed this way and will take a few hours to heat but months later still no heat i have tried the offset heating curve and put it on winter, then turned the thermostat up to 7 even though they said it will be warm enough on 4 or 5 please can you help with any advice.

Hi, this is something i posted on another thread......

We went to the CAB yesterday for some advice on what legal action we can take against either the building contractors or Nibe and basically the Nibe system is not Fit For Purpose, realistically the housing association should be taking either of these companies to Trading Standards, if they don't we will.

I didn't know much about Sweden until yesterday, obviously this is where this biggest pile of scrap metal comes from and to be perfectly honest wish they had kept it to themselves because in this country this unit will never beat a gas combi boiler. The Nibe system runs very well in Sweden because they don't have any gas in the country and only use hydroelectric, no wonder it's so cheap to run. Air source pumps are extremely expensive until the out door temperature reaches 8 deg, to be honest i think it's higher than this. Anything below this and it's not cost effective so for 5months of the year we are in trouble with high cost bills.

We have paid one bill and will not be paying anymore, if the electricity wants to take legal action against me for this than the housing association will then be held responsible.

We have contacted Midlands Today (news) and they are willing to take this story online along with our local newspaper, i look forward to dragging the Nibe name through all sorts of mud and making sure i can damage their company as much as possible, this is something i will not let go until this unit is removed from our home.

Even since the Nibe engineer has been out the heating is up and down, one morning is nice and warm then the next it's freezing and as for water during the day we just don't have any the hot water sensor suggests it's running at 30+ deg but the water runs cold, the only way to get hot water even for washing up is either to run the kettle or put the immersion water on for 3hrs, which is just a joke.

One more thing, sorry i go on but am so frustrated at this system they have given us. Our house is what that call Phase 2 basically Phase 1 was a block of flats and Phase 2 was a block of flats with 2 semi-detached house and 7 terraced houses. The Phase 1 flats were build with Gas and combi boilers and run extremely well, now Phase 2 were built with these things and are so expensive. We have been told Phase 2 had to meet the Code 3, if that's the case then why didn't they put combi boilers in with a solar panel on the roof, we have been told by the Energy Trust this would have been more than sufficient and would have cost less to install. The Nibe system costs £4000 to install, a good quality combi boiler would have cost £2000 and there is no way a solar panel would have cost another £2000.

Also the energy guy that surveyed this told us the house was not built for low cost but for low energy to meet the carbon footprint, but if this system is using so much electricity how can it be meeting the carbon footprint there is just no chance.

Sorry to hear your story. Hope things will get resolved soon. May I know which developer it is that built your place?

Hi thanks, i really do hope so i won't let it go now until it's sorted even if that means going to court.

Our developers were Aspects the good news is Orbit have held some money back for a year until everything is sorted i.e. cracks in plaster etc, so maybe this money can be used to skip these systems.

    Thanks again.
