Applying for a CRB as an individual

My daughter and boyfriend (who have been working abroad) are about to be employed by a British company abroad. They will be employed in a job that involves contact with children.
The job information asks them to either send a copy of a CRB (which they do not have) or to apply themselves via Disclosure Scotland. I know they can't apply as individuals themselves with CRB and as we don't live in Scotland wasn't sure about this route.
Having looked at the Disclosure Scotland site it seems to make provision for individuals via other organisations for which there is a fee. This seems a very strange way to get a CRB and is more expensive than the employers applying directly.
Does anyone have an experience of this or comments please? I am aware of the usual channel for applyng for CRBs as I am involved in that with those I line manage at work.
Thanks

The Scottish route is not, of course, a CRB and a CRB for another job would not be enough to officially cover them in another (at the moment any way).
What sort of employer is it? A charity or private sector care home/educational establishment?0 -

It's a holiday operator that runs weeks for schools. It seems strange to me that they recommending the Scottish route - and that maybe they are trying to avoid paying the CRB fee themselves.somewhere between Heaven and Woolworth's0 -

I just telephoned CRB helpline to check on this. I was told that a CRB is not required to work with children abroad but the host countrycan ask for a 'Subject Access letter'. This is obtained by going to a Police Headquarters and requesting to see the Data Protection Officer. On completion of the form and payment of £10 a written response will be sent back to confirm that the applicant does not have a criminal record.
I asked about Disclosure Scotland and whether this would be acceptable either at home or abroad the the representative said this is probably for the company's own checks. He gave me a contact number for Disclosure Scotland and suggested calling them on Monday to check.
As my daughter is working for a large organisation that works with many British school children it is probable that they know is required but I'll check on Monday anyway.somewhere between Heaven and Woolworth's0
