German Christmas decoration

Every year my childrens school have to make decorations for the Christmas trees at the church. This year the theme for my eldest sons year is 'Germany'.
I haven't got a clue and google isn't being very helpful today either! It needs to be made at home so I can help him with it, does anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you

  • How about some saltdough 'gingerbread' men? You could paint them and poke a little hole through the top to hang them from. Or some little felt ones? You could also cut shapes out and decorate to make little gingerbread houses?

    German gingerbread hearts are traditional.

If you don't want to bake, make them from brown card.

Proper Lebkuchen won't hang well, I'm in Germany and we mostly have gingerbread, wooden hearts and stars and real candles. Of those, gingerbread will be the easiest to make at home :)

I think (can't remember) Father Christmas is dressed in Green in Germany. I heard that we only dress him in red because of Coca Cola, but that's probably an urban legand!

no, it's true! Santa was green and coca cola changed his outfit to red for an ad and it stuck!

Thank you all so much, I knew you would all come up with great suggestions! I thought the Coca Cola thing was a myth too :)

  • I have made Gingerbread style decorations with Reception children.

Draw & cut out a heart or other shape on brown/beige/biscuit coloured card (or even felt). Use hole punch to punch holes all around edge of shape, thread wool/string through holes for the icing.
