When to let jobcentre know

Hi,

After ages of job hunting and perseverance, I've finally landed a job. Though not the dream job, but I've decided to take it. I've been on JSA for 6 months now- today I have had an informal email stating that they would like to offer me the position. They would send me the employment contract in the next few days.

However, I'm not due to start until 20 Dec. I have already spent a good amount of my savings from JSA on interview travel and cloths. My concern is if I let jobcentre know today that I have got the job, they would immediately stop the JSA and there is a big 2 months gap from the date I start and date I receive my first salary.

Help me please.

no they will stop your benefits from the 19th december .. the day before your job is due to start- you do also know that you could have got interview travel and clothes cost from your benefits advisor .. they have a fund for those who have bene on benefits over 13 weeks to help you back into work

To claim Job Seekers Allowance you must continue to look for work. Even though you have a job offer for 20th Dec to claim between now and then you must still look around. You have a short while after starting work to notify the Jobcentre. If you ask about it at your next signing on day they'll tell you what to do. After you start you fill out the form that's in the folder and post it in. I'm amazed you have a job offer starting just before christmas. If it's full time they'll have to pay you for the bank holidays for the first few weeks of work. 8 days of work and 3 days bank holidays. It'll even out after a year though if you stay that long.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Yes, I did knew about the help towards interview travel and other, but was earlier also told that this fund of help towards travel and cloths is subject to their budget and availability of funds which was not available (only 10% of the total costs was available) when I had requested. Also for the cloths purchase there were quiet a restriction So I did not bothered to reclaim this help but paid the price from my savings.

Yes, it is a full-time and even I was amazed- when I had applied it was temporary but in the call for second interview they had mentioned that they would like to like to make it permanent.

I would let them know the day after you actually start working, employers have been known to change their minds after a 'financial rethink' especially these days.

Boots offered me a job a few years ago, start date everything, the Friday before I was due to start the following Monday, they telephoned me and said they had had a financial rethink and there was no longer a vacancy. Of course in the mean time I had signed off, bought a bus pass etc..

Won't do that again not until the job actually starts.

Although there were no real issues signing back on with the Job Centre, apparently Boots are renowned for doing this sort of thing!

That's unbelievable from a supposedly reputable company - you must have been really peeved with that - but good advice given to the OP though - albeit from a lesson learnt from your disappointing experience.

Totally agree, certainly wait until the job has commenced - but well done top2b for getting it anyway - especially at this time of the year.

shikoku I wonder if you have had a 'financial rethink' about shopping at Boots after being dropped in it like that?

Yes for I boycotted them for several years and I seldom go into Boots even now :)
