  • Every year without fail my mother in law gives me an envelope with £20 for each of us in our house hold. I'm expecting it any day. I really resent it as I feel there is no thought behind it & it's an easy option .

My birthday is in January and I've got to admit that I love it when my mum gives me money for my birthday.

It means I can buy something without thinking, "oh dd3 needs new shoes, I shouldn't really spend that on myself" etc.

Last couple of years I've gone to a factory outlet and one year I bought a Burberry handbag, never would have bought it without birthday money and last year bought a Jaeger jacket, again never would have spent my money on it, so for me money is a fab pressie!!

I hate GIVING money because I like the diea fo giving a present I generally know they'll like and mroe importantly - youc an often spend a lot less but look liek you ahven't! :D

With money I generally give more than i would spend so it looks better!

I would rather get money than something totally useless to me. To be honest now I'm a grown up I realy miss getting money for Christmas because I used to love that after the excitment of Christmas day is over, you know you still have that £20 or whatever to go and enjoy in the sales and look forward to something exciting.

I agree, i shop throughout the year and always end up with more for my money than if i was shopping in December. For example my SIL this year is getting a car kit (furry dice, tax disc holder etc), a No7 make up set from Boots, a nightie in a bag from Tesco, and a fcuk gift box full of goodies. That in total has cost us around £10 because ive snapped up stuff in sales. Yet i wouldnt dream of just handing her a tenner!

But i dont mind recieving cash as i think fab, can treat myself in the sales. But i think it would get a bit irritating if it was the same every year. My aunt (70+ but an active fit woman who regularly has my 4 year old for weekends! ) always gives us cash at birthdays but at xmas will make you tell her what you want and then buys it when she is out shopping or next time she is out with us. She on the other hand never wants anything and always says you shouldnt spend your cash on me when she opens stuff! :rotfl:

My Grandad always gave cash, but he made it more exciting than just giving you a note. He'd buy a small box of chocs and slit the cellophane to slide the note inside, or one year I got a small bud vase with the note rolled up and sticking out the top!

My Gran always just gives my Mam and her son a wad of notes to hand out to people. She doesn't even bother to give them to people herself. Last year Mam said she had to buy gifts, so my Mam went shopping for her.

I got a box of toiletries which was nice, but I also got 2 different toiletry sets from my Mam too. I thought it was daft her buying me a set from Gran when she'd already bought me 2 herself, and I would have rather had the cash :o
Here I go again on my own....

I dont like money instead of presents, but this year might ask my nan for the money instead of the usual dodgy present that never gets used so its a waste of money :D

I'm gonna go completely back on my opinion now, because after just making the 10" fruit cake, the Kitchen Aid my mother in law gave me (30+ years old) is really struggleing and did go bang and have smoke coming out of it in July when I made a cake! I'm trying to do cake decorating as a second income with a view to eventually doing it full-time.

I'm gonna ask for money so I can buy a new mixer because they cost £200+ and the contribution would be good! I also need to invest in a VERY LARGE mixing bowl, I mad to tip the cake mixture and fruit into the washing up bowl (throughly cleaned out first) because I didn't have a bowl big enough to mix it all in! 3 hours 15 minutes left of cooking time, will update later (and post up recipe)

I loved getting money for pressies when the kids were little. I used to keep it to spend on them . My MIL used to say that was the drawback of her giving me money but I would buy them something that I would like to play with ,with them and enjoy it hugely.
  • i hate giving money, but my nephew and my dh's godson have everything under the sun and throw away what they dont need. I would be mortified if i saw something i gave them be thrown out and so we give them both £15 now.
personally they both dont deserve anything as they are both terribly spoilt ..but of my 3 brothers only one has reproduced so i cant suddenly not buy for him as it would cause family up roar !!!

likewise dh cant suddenly stop buying for his godson as he and his father have been best mates for over 25 years and it is not dh's job to tell his best mate he doesnt approve of his parenting.
