Chick peas - do I really need to soak them?

I hope it's OK to post this here. I thought you lovely people would know.

Is it really necessary to soak chickpeas for 8-12 hours? Am I likely to be OK if I ignore that I just go ahead and make the falafel that I really fancy eating. :)

  • if you're in that much of a rush why don't you use tinned ones? They don't need soaking!

Sadly I don't think you'd be able to do anything with dried chickpeas you hadn't soaked..

I don't have any tinned chickpeas 'in stock'. :) I have started soaking and guess the falafel will have to wait until tomorrow. Shame! :)

Yes - otherwise the felafel will be hard and horrid.

    Or use tinned...

  • Unless you want to be eating chickpea flavour bullets, then yes.
  • I have heard of quick soaking - soak in a large amount of boiling water for 4 hours instead of overnight. Then change the water and do the boiling for 10 minutes thing before cooking as normal.

I do this with yellow lentils if I have to but I'm not sure how safe it is really.

I rarely soak any beans that I cook, including chick peas and they're fine. I just give them a good rinse

I think the quick soaking method wouldn't work for chick peas. I use quite a lot of chickpeas in my cooking (dh likes them) and I always buy the tinned ones when I see them on offer. TBH, to get them tender enough to be edible even after soaking, you have to cook them for so long that it isn't really that cheap. I buy them in Asian grocers when they are on good offer. If I don't use the whole tin, I just put them in a bag and flatten it and freeze. Then I don't waste any. Handy to stick a handful in soup.

I have a chick pea question.

I have them in a tin and was wondering do I still boil them before I add them to a homemade curry?

    Any help would be appreciated.

No - tinned chick peas are ready cooked. Just drain and then add them to whatever dish you are making.
