Question for those who mill their own flour...

where do you get your grains from?
and how long can you store them?

i've just ordered 20kg wheat berries and 20kg rye berries from www,browfarmwheatproducts.co.uk

at £18.50 each INCLUDING delivery it seemed like the best deal around.
i just hope it won't go off before i can use it.

can't wait to see DH's face when he sees the sacks!!:rotfl:

I order mine from http://www.wessexmill.co.uk/ I've been very happy with them and the quality of wheat. I dont know whether they are the cheapest though. I buy hard white and soft white (soft is the equivelent to plain flour)

I buy in smaller amounts as it lasts forever. You must keep me up to date with how you get on. What mill did you get in the end and what do you think of it?

After a lot of hesitation I bought a Wondermill, mainly because it has a lifetime gurantee and it's 15% off until 31st october. It's also the one people seem to be recommending. It hasn't arrived yet but due anyday now!

I'm a bit worried about storing the grain as I remeber buying a small packet of wheat grains to sprout and finding bugs in it - had to throw it away. Would hate to have to do that with 20kg!!!

ETA: I've just had a look at Wessex Mill's site but can't see grains, only flour. Do you get grains or flour from them?

Errr you may get a shock then when you start using your grain... there is likely to be bugs!! I always sieve my wheat first, then sort through it again, picking out the rubbish and this does include bugs. I'm sure I read somewhere that big flour mills have an allowable percentage of bugs that are able to go through the mill!

I buy wheat, not flour but I had to ring up Wessex mills to ask about actual wheat. They sold it me at the going rate for flour so I guess not cheap but its difficult to find good grain.

I do half and half with bread flour otherwise its too strong for the kids, but if im making a cheese sauce etc, then i'll just use milled wheat.

Cant wait to hear how you get on! :T
  • Hi

Did you manage to find the best wheat supplier and how is the milling machine.

I am planning to make my own flour and wish to learn from you
