New Job with Northern Rock, subject to credit check!

Dear All,

Having searched the forums I can't see anything specifically about Northern Rock's pre-employment credit checks, so apologies if I have missed it!

I'm considering working as a contractor for Northern Rock. Despite this being at a mid-management level, the role is nothing to do with the company's money, nor anything to do with lending (i.e. I wouldn't have any element of control over monies).

I've just learnt that I will have to have pre-employment credit checks completed, which has got me extremely nervous! On my credit report I have 3 credit card defaults from c. 4 years ago (in a nutshell = period of poor health, credit cards defaulted, once I realised the impact of what had happened I immediately paid off all 3 cards in full). Since then I have had little or no debt and pay off other credit card debt in full every month. I don't have any CCJs.

Can anyone advise me if:

a) the defaults will show on Northern Rock's credit search?

b) will these defaults be a 'showstopper' for me in gaining employment with this bank?

Kind regards,

A very nervous JROxford.

    Northern Rock requiring credit checks!

They need to look closer to home.

Thanks, though I'm seeking advice on my situation rather than opinions on the company itself

When my friend got her job for a financial company (dealing direct with money) her boss said they were only interested in bankruptcy and CCJs.
The defaulst will show on the search, as will all accounts youve had in the last 6 years. If your defaults are not that recent and they show as settled I wouldn't have thought they would cause Northern Rock not to employ you.
Have you checked your credit report to check they do show as settled and that everything is correct?

    Lighten up!

You will get other 'opinions' on here, but many will attempt to help you by having a light hearted aspect of many peoples situations to assist you in being 'less nervous'.

    As for your 'own situation'

Not an ideal history to be involved in the financial sector - but I think you already knew that or you would not have posted and you need to ask yourself, if you were a recruiter in a similar sector, would you employ someone with your history?

They probably would not even offer you a loan - let alone a job. Sorry for being harsh, but in todays climate, employers are in a position where they can be very selective and NR may deem that your financial past is too much of a risk.

Even the actions taken by job seekers many years ago are now hindering their chances of employment today.

did you have to declare the ccj's, when you applied?

quidco were doing a casback offer for credit expert, on which you can add a notice of correction, offering reasons for the debts.

though as all piad off off a few years back, i reckon / hope it wont be a prob..

NR cant really be too stuffy about it, giving we pwn them!

definately get yourself notice of corrections on your credit reports, be honest and open about why these happened.

When you apply for anything that requires a credit check and a decision to be made if you have notices of correction on your report the decision will have to be made by a person and not a computer.

If your reasons are genuine and sincere any decent person will see that and accept you providing your other accounts have been managed well

  • Thanks for all the above replies. Seem's everyone (bar one) is generally positive about my situation. I shall add NOCs today and generally be upfront about my past financial challenges.

Maybe the 'bar one' you are referring to is being realistic as opposed to posting things that you wish to see.

Some could describe your past 'financial challenges' as 'financial indiscretions' - let's hope for your sake it isn't Northern Rock.

In the end, it is Northern Rock who will or won't kick you in the teeth. The opinions you get here don't really matter and will neither encourage nor discourage NR in kicking you in the teeth.

Just ask Northern Rock for permission to run credit checks on them....
