Can we claim on self assurance 4 years after my Girlfriend had cancer!

Options
Right just a quick bit of advice needed here!

Basically, my girl has had her own house for 7 years now! She took out a standard mortgage and an addition self assurance mortgage protection policy.

About 4 years ago she was diagnosed as having a Cancerous malignant tumor on the scalp of her head! She had to under go a painful operation to remove it and has since been attending 3, 6 and no 9 monthly checks at the cancer hospital.

It wasn't until we was thinking of moving and going through the mortgage information that we noticed the Self Assurance policy pays out on critical illness's such as cancer!

Problem is, the policy was the last thing on her mind when she was diagnosed with the cancer, and as a result kind of got lost in the haze! Hence she never claimed and it is now 4 years since her cancer!

My question is, can she still claim on her policy and if so will they try to fob her off by saying it wasn't that critical as she's still alive now!

Please can you advise! The policy is a self assurance with Scottish Provident.

what does the policy say about making a claim? does it impose a time limit? if not, submit a claim.

And even if it does impose a time limit I’d have a think about whether, given the circumstances, any such limit might fall outside the FOS “treat your customers fairly” guidelines.
  • Check the policy T and C's. There is probably a timeline put in to protect the insurers. That said, they are not the heartless b**t***s that some would like us to believe. I would put the claim in. Nothing ventured, nothing gained however, before you enter into what could be a lengthy, draining process, it may be worthwhile telephoning the underwriters of the insurance Co and check if the type of cancer that was diagnosed was covered under the terms of the policy. Not all are. Hope this helps and hope that your Girlfiend has/is making a full recovery. Good luck.
  • Cheers all! I will talk to her this weekend and get her to call them up! To be honest seen as she had cancer, and the form of cancer she had I think is covered why shouldn't they pay up! Having cancer can seriously make you forget about things like that!

Plus she's such a nice lass, she probably think she's taking the micky by asking!

    Cheers People!
