I have a degree ad worked as a receptionist for three years. in my case it seemed to work well for the employer as they got someone with plenty of experience and good skills to do administrative work on less than an administrators wage. Of course i got very frustrated and had hoped to move up in the company. There are plenty of people around now with good skills and degrees taking on whatever job they can get. But don't discount them as it might be a good stepping stone for them within your company. i wish it had been for me.0

nzmeg this is like you said the reason I applied for reception and admin work generally to gain experience and ultimately see where it would lead within that company, because I lack experience in an office environment, but it seems in my area that if you have a degree your not considered for hotel work because I think the recruiter might think you will only see this is as a stop gap or stepping stone to something better.
But I hope I'll get something soon, just been applying for any kind of job even bar work just to be at least working, when you've worked since your 16th birthday and then nothing it's quite weird lol.0 -

It is all very well, but I think if you expect employers to interview 100 people with degree for MNW job just in case there will be person like you then you will be dissapointed..
As much as a company cannot often afford to pay more then NMW they also cannot afford to pay a manager to sit in interviews for weeks..
I know it is hard and harsh, but it is a reality..0 -

How do facial piercings prevent one from being an effective receptionist?0

Facial piercings are often seen as off-putting, threatening or even unhygienic by many people and employers don't believe they convey the right impression of the organisation.
But I agree that someone with FPs isn't necessarily ineffective. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
If a position if getting 100's of applicants why not pay minimum wage?
Really is a recruiters market right now0 -

Maybe if people with FPs (or tattoos, outlandish hairstyles, scars etc) weren't effectively banned from customer facing jobs those incorrect ideas would disappear sooner rather than later.0 -

Or maybe those who choose to have facial piercings could think before making themselves so unpresentable? You cannot compare someone who piercings to someone with scarring - one is by choice, the other clearly is not.Gone ... or have I?0 -
Since when has a lack of command of spoken English been a bar to employment in the hotel industry? Have you stayed in a London hotel lately?
The OP is being unrealistic. If you are expecting high quality people to work for close to minimum wage then of course you will mostly get people who intend to move onto better things...almost by definition.0
