Then there's the Olympics.
I'm as optimisitic as they come. But even I can't get excited about a posh chap getting married and a bit of long jump.0 -

You will once people start planning street parties and everyone's given the day off work. Every car's got flags sticking out of the windows and it's hot and sunny again.
I forgot to mention it's the Queens Diamond Jubilee in 2012. Not that I give a stuff about the Royal Family but it's nice when the country gets behind something, a bit like the world cup.
Forget your economic doom and gloom, no-ones going to be interested. We've had it rammed down our throats for the last four years.0 -
I remember Di and Charles' wedding too. I have to say that now there is much more anti-royal feeling than ever there was now, (me included). People now know how that wedding was a sham, and are far less likely to gaze with awe on this one. I for one have avoided so far all the tv hype, mostly by Sky +-ing stuff!0

So are we to assume the 33 million Americans who watched Diana's funeral on TV did so at gun point? That the special edition of Time on the death of Diana didn't really sell 1.2 million copies (easily the largest sale for such a supplement)? That the awful Sarah Ferguson became a minor celebrity in the USA on the strength of her towering intellect and brilliant repartee?
and how many watched the queen mum's funeral? diana had a certain resonance with many people and it wasn't really to do with being royal - other world figures have the same impact (elvis, jfk, mother teresa). Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -

My favourite:
A French embassy spokesman said: "We never cease to be impressed by Britain. Particularly its ability to p*ss money up a rope on s**t like this. Have you thought about maybe spending the cash on a train that can do more than 20 f***ing miles an hour?"
In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:0 -
The finest thing about this announcement is the months of torture the Lefties are in for. The moaning and whinging started immediately. Great stuff, keep it coming.0

So what about Fergie? Hardly Mother Theresa and yet a celebrity in the USA.
Sorry, Ninky, whether it fits your ideology or not (or mine, come to that) the idea of royalty still has many people enthralled, both in this country and overseas. Pretending otherwise is like trying to suggest the (republican) Guardian outsells the (monarchist) Mail. Their circulations pretty much reflect the balance of opinion in this country, I'd suggest.0 -

oh the daily mail supports them so that's alright then. what is the headline today - unemployed woman marries son of immigrant to get free house? Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0
