Question for traditional breadmakers

For various reasons that i wont go into I have decided that baking bread traditionally, i.e. in an oven rather than a breadmaker, works best for me. I have one problem however - cleaning up afterwards!

I am finding it really difficult to get the dough that is stuck to the side of the bowl off and when i finally manage it it ends up stuck to the sponge or brush that ive used! Soaking doesn't seem to help. Is there any secret to this or is it just something i have to put up with?

I use a plastic fish slice type spatula ( not the flexible rubbery kind but a firmer plastic) to get the worst off. It doesn't get the lot off but removes most of it, then I soak the bowl and use the slice again. I stopped using a scourer or a brush as all the gunky dough always gets stuck on the pad/ bristles.

Many years ago I read about wiping up flour and washing with cold water only.

Warm water reacts with the flour and turns it to sticky, gluey dough.

Since then I have always wiped the worktops/bowls etc. with a sponge wetted with cold water. Rinse the sponge out with cold water before finishing the washing up with hot water.

I get this too  I didn't know about the cold water thing:T

I'm constantly covered in bread dough :rotfl: Someone asked me what was wrong with my arm the other day. When I looked at it , it had a nasty looking white crust on it - no, not some vile skin disease, I'd just been making bread again:D

I was just going to say about the cold water tip, never never rinse anything floury with warm or hot water because the heat basically cooks it!
  • Thanks for this! I have a thing about always using really hot water to clean/wash up so that could be it. Now i should be able to clean up and save money at the same time.
