Op there's no need to be rude, not everyone is as well off as you

I didn't mean to be rude, I have been there, though with me it was shrink wrap.

I almost killed myself because of that. I insulated the windows and door so well that the coal fire was not burning efficiently and I fell asleep in the living room.

My wife had been out and when she came home I was lying unconsious on a chair with the fire almost out, when she opened the living room door the fire started burning again because it had been starved of oxygen. She pulled me outside to revive me.

That was 35 years ago and I would never do anything like shrink wrap or bubble wrap again.

Is it just me or is this thread a little pointless?

OP comes on saying he cant save any more, gets offered quite a few ways to save more and rubbishes all of them..

    As for

"I just thought that others might be interested that once you have made all the savings you can then you can't make any more. So that when the prices for gas and electricity go up there are no more savings to be had."

Well isnt that just common sense? Bit like saying "I've drunk my entire cup of coffee, now I've drunk it I cant drink any more"

Of course it is, I just wondered how many people would tell me how to save more energy when I had already said I couldn't save any more.

You could save more. But there comes a point when it is less and less cost-efffective to do so. The energy-saving provisions many of us have today (double glazing, cavity wall insulation, deep loft insulation) have only become widespread because of the huge rise in energy costs. If those costs rise another 100% or so, then more expensive technologies to save more energy will become widespread.

by last November I had reduced my gas consumption from 22,000 kWh average per year to 18,500 average per year as of last November.

How big is the property to use that much gas, this morning I had an annual summary from my supplier as below this is for a two bedroom detached bungalow that we moved into two years ago.

You have used 6733kWh of gas and 4263kWh of electricity during the previous 12 months

In the first six months we had windows and doors replaced a conservatory built which we use throughout the year, a new energy efficient boiler, cavity wall insulation done and loft insulation increased, we are also retired and use the heating to keep the property at a decent comfortable temperature all through the winter months.

I had added you to my ignore list, so we don't waste each others time again.:naughty:

    OK!

I wonder if you realise that if it is colder outside where I stay compared to where you stay that more energy is required to keep the house at the same temperature.

We are not comparing like for like.

I love it when people say they only spend £10 a year heating their house then happen to mention they live in Spain or somewhere a lot warmer than Scotland.

Do you ever have to put heating on in July or August? We do.

I actually use a lot less gas than some of my neighbours in identically built houses and they work so are out of their houses during the day. Some neighbours have ripped out their warm air heating and put in new boiler and radiators and are using more gas than me.

What is the energy efficiency rating of your house?
  • It's quite true that some people have exceptionally low energy usage compared to the rest of us. This can be due to a combination of factors, particularly lifestyle. If you use iMeasure like I do you can actually compare yourself against similar properties with the same number of occupants and see where you stand. It sounds as if your gas usage is on the high side, but if you have your heating on all day AND in the summer months AND maintain a high temperature what else do you expect?
