There are options you could choose, people here have given sound advice but you don't want to take any?

" I would rather be comfortable and spend a few quid more." Why come on here looking for money saving advise then?
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Quite Right. I was in same position bottom wise, but found that with a small investment in a wood burning stove I could obtain comfort conditions in the lounge and turn the thermostat for the house down to 19deg .
Saved quite a bit on fuel.

." Why come on here looking for money saving advice then?

But I did not post looking for money saving advice.

I just thought that others might be interested that once you have made all the savings you can then you can't make any more. So that when the prices for gas and electricity go up there are no more savings to be had.
you could consider a laptop or even a netbook

Why? when you reach my age a laptop screen is almost unreadable, I prefer my 24 in widescreen monitor
but found that with a small investment in a wood burning stove

I don't think the council or whoever it is that police smokeless control zones would be very happy if I put in a wood burning stove.

What! bubble wrap on my windows? I am sorry but there is no way I would do that.

What next, wash in cold water. Cold baths.

Get a life, I lived with that when I was a child, one bath a week and slept in an unheated bedroom where I made ice lollies on the window sill in the winter. I didn't work for over 49 years to go back to the dark ages.

Do you make a flask of coffee or do you boil the kettle every time?

I connected a plug in monitor to my kettle and was using less than 10p worth of electricity a day.

Just because a kettle has a 3 kWh element doesn't mean it uses 3 kWh of electricity every time you switch it on.

And my fridge freezer is A+ rated.

Even my tumble dryer only costs 20p to dry a load of washing. A friend of mine doesn't have a tumble dryer, costs to much to run she says, then goes to a laundry and puts £2 or whatever in one there when she needs her washing dried quickly, plus petrol in her car.
  • Well I'm retired too, my annual gas usage is 10,000 kwh, and electricity is 3000 kwh. It's actually come down from around 15,000 kwh and 4500 kwh when I was working. Heating is only on in the morning for a couple of hours and in the evening for about 6 hours. Rest of the time we are out enjoying our freedom.

It sounds like you're using twice the heating as I am for a similar house, so I guess you are either overheating your house or your insulation isn't effective.

Op there's no need to be rude, not everyone is as well off as you.
Some people have no choice but to put bubble wrap in windows.
You clearly don't need any help.
I'd suggest you get a life yourself but I was brought up properly, with respect, not dragged up.

    your insulation isn't effective

It is very effective if it can reduce my gas usage by 3500 kWh a year when my heating is on for 8 hours more a day.

When my heating goes off at night the temperature upstairs never drops below 16 deg C before the heating comes on in the morning.

I am selling my house and I have had an energy report and there might be savings of £30 per year to be had. But only if I replace my efficient warm air heating with a new boiler and install radiators. Not very efficient is it? Spend £1000s to save pennies.

Do you happen to live in Scotland by any chance? Current outside temperature 0 deg C
