Am I right in thinking that these cannot be sold, only surrendered?

That is correct. They have a daily value so if i wanted 100 units of xyz fund I would buy them at their daily price. There is no reason for me to pay you more to buy your units. (simplified a bit there but you get the idea)

Can't you get a unit linked with profits policy though? One which is linked to the performance of the underlying WP fund? This would then presumably benefit from a terminal bonus across the units in the same way a non-linked With Proft endowment might (I don't know this - I am asking)? I seem to remember reading about them a while ago. I can see normal Non Proft UL policies would operate as dunstonh said (and, indeed, I'm pretty sure I have at least one pension in these )

Policies can be made paid up. In that no further premiums will be payable and the policy will mature at its normal expiry date.
