Melancholly - sorry to sound thick but I don't have a map. Is Hulme near didsbury? I would love to find an Asda - I'm swiftly running out of clothes and George suits my student budget!

a slowcooker wouldn't set off any heat or smoke or steam sensors in your halls of residence. Toasters are usually the worst offenders for that!!!

    Good luck

Hulme is to the west of the university. Hulme Asda is probably a 10 minute walk from the Student's Union. There's another Asda in longsight which might be easier.

Another option is the ridiculously sized Asda at Sportcity (next to the Man City ground), this has a huge George section. Or there's a George shop at Manchester Fort shopping centre on Cheetham Hill Road, north of the city.

If you're stuck for how to get places have a look at GMPTE.com for busses/trains/trams in Mcr.

Worldwide can be good if you're after specific Indian things or some cheapish veg. Go buy some Mango Lassi, it's really good! It's not worth trying to do a decent shop in there though.

Add me to MSN if you like, my username is over there <--- , it's always nice to speak to more people at uni in Mcr.

Another OS poster (sorry I can't remember who) posted the following handy link for a collection of microwave recipes.

Unless it's gone since I lived there, haven't you got the Aldi in Didsbury - v cheap? Or has it been turned into another bar/estate agent?

I haven't been to Wordwide (it used to be an Aldi when I lived in Rusholme) but generally the Asian grocers stores in Rusholme are fantastic; Great value for money and a huge range of stock. Remember to factor in your bus fare when you decide where to shop though.

I think it is well worth your getting a map. I know I wouldn't be without. I feel having a map can give you that bit more confidence to go an explore. There is a tourist information centre near the town hall (top of Oxford Rd, near St Peter's Sq and to the left) and they have some good maps. You'd probably need to get a little AZ for it to cover Didsbury but it might be worth getting a city centre guide too because they have a lot more information on.

If you know you are going to be missing meals you might be able to find someone who is in self catered but can't cook and sell them your meal vouchers. I know people in OP who miss meals because of sports or whatever often trade meal tickets with friends or other residents who have a guest staying.
  • What ever you do don't leave anything, including food, unattended in Halls of residents. When I was a student nurse somebody cooked a chicken and left on the side to rest for a short time and when he came back all that was left was the carcus. My brother also lived in a Hall of Residents and had his stuff nicked from the fridge. The only thing of mine that I left unattended and walked was my tin opener. Good luck with your course.

  • Hello Manchester students!

Worldwide in Rusholme is the business. Stop off on your way back from uni - I'm assuming you have bus passes? Rusholme is generally good too - loads of smaller grocery shops selling basics.

If you're heading for town, the new market at the back of the Arndale is now open and well worth a visit for cheap fish, meat, fruit and veg. Also check out the veg market on Church Street (near the market) and other markets around town. Longsight is great.

Hulme in Asda is well worth a visit - go later at night (it's a 24-hour store) and you'll get loads of bargains.
 What if the hokey cokey is what it's all about?

the best place i've seen for asda clothing is the huge asda at trafford park (right opposite the trafford centre) - i think the 250 bus goes there from the centre of town. getting to hulme from didsbury is quite difficult by bus - no direct route, but you can change buses near the music college on oxford road. if there are a few of you it may work out to be reasonably cheap to get a group of 3/4 and share a taxi?

tr3mor - i'm a postgrad up here - but as i do some demonstrating/marking i try to keep as anonymous as possible incase there are undergrads i might interact with on here!
