Freeview box borked

Hi all, hope this is in the right part. Just a little advice I'm after really, I have a freeview box bought from Curry's in January this year, it has been non responsive for a couple of months when first used but okay once warmed up after a while but I was okay with that.
It is now getting worse so I will be taking it back with it's receipt, I have been speaking to someone who used to work for them and they say that if they don't have a one for the same price they can just offer me a higher priced one where I pay the difference. This is where I thought it might be wrong, as the people who sold me the product do they not have to repair (apparently they don't do this) or replace (to the same or higher value???) the product?
thanks in advance and sorry for blabbering on lol

I do believe they're only legally obliged to offer you a replacement of the same value or a refund. I don't think they have to offer you something of greater value. But in the end analysis the box as it is, is useless, so just take in back, be nice and who knows!0
