Thanks for all your suggestions, I like the sound of a hog roast but H2B is not a pork fan so thats out the window.
I'll defo look into outside caterers, didn't realise they could do that!

Just to let you know that some of the hogroast companies will do a lamb or turkey instead

Hi
We had our reception at The Spotted Cow, Holbrook. I think the carvery main course must have been about £8-10 per head, we had bacon cobs for the evening do and we had puddings rather than having the wedding cake for desert so these were all extra, but the wine was pretty reasonable iirc. We had 80 people which was a bit of a squeeze but we managed it. In the evening they moved the tables and we had one of the landlady's friends as a dj, everyone was dancing!! It's worth ringing and asking - it was lovely but it might end up a wee bit over your budget! xxx0 -
Thank you, I'll look again at the hog roast companies and at the spotted cow.
I'm really not enjoying this at all, have half a mind to make it me, him and a couple of witnesses then nip to Gregs for a steak bake!!

Finding the venue is the worst bit of wedding planning in my opinion. When we first started planning, I wasn't enjoying it at all. Then we found and booked our venue and everything else has been really enjoyable.
Of course if you do want to make it just you, him and some witnesses that's not necessarily the wrong thing to do!Don't worry about typing out my username - Call me COMP(Unless you know my real name - in which case, feel free to use that just to confuse people!)0 -
Ok I found a caterers that will do 3 meats carvery, stuffing, bread rolls, sauces, potatoes, salad and coleslaw for £685 for 65 adults and will throw in free sausages for the kids!
Does that sound like a good deal? Would still need a venue, decorations and a DJ and only have £1000 tops to spend on the reception. On the plus side my sisters are on a mission to create me a cut-price candy buffet (methinks their motives are not entirely altruistic!!).0 -
Your quote for caterers works out at £10.50 per head for 65 guests and on top of that you now have to find a venue...have you somewhere in mind for this yet?
It seems to me that you may have done this a little back to front in as much as you have a caterer in mind but no where for the reception as yet to be held....I cant help but think that you may be better phoning pubs/restutants in the seach area you originally gave and asking what they could do for your budget of £1000 and for how many people...explain that you dont need starters/desserts etc and I think you may find that the origianal estimates of up to £30 per head will be much less.you could go to about £11.50 per head if it included venue hire and catering...that would leave you £250 for DJ and drinks
If your budget is £1000 then to get a venue and a DJ plus some drinks as you initially invisaged in your original post, for the remaining £315 of your budget is a lot to ask of the budget based on £685 for just the foodfrugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

Hiya
When my dad & stepmum married they had a carvery meal. They also had a small budget. They married in the registry office then we all went to a toby carvery- they had reserved a section of it for us (was only about 20 of us for that) and it was fantastic. All went on to a workingmans club for a big party with all their friends afterwards- a really memorable day. The bonus of the toby carvery was because we got there at a certain time we could either have a starter or dessert for free- not sure if they still do that offer
Good luck x0 -

Hi there. Thanks for the replies. We decided in the end to go for a buffet reception. I was really against this at first because I didn't want to just eat sandwiches and sausage rolls on my wedding day. However, there were just too many guests to squeeze into a pub. We found a lovely caterer who does different things ( not a sausage roll in sight haha) so we've gone for that and hired a room in a social club not far from home. Thanks for the info and good luck bargain seeker with your enquiries x0
