Homemade drinks (instead of jiuces, squash, etc)

We're trying to do as much stuff from scratch as possible.
We're doing OK for most things but drinks are an area I haven't managed yet.

Non alcoholic stuff only! Instead of juice, squash, etc and when plain water doesn't do the trick.

Does anyone have any suggestions please?

I've tried gingerbeer but it was horrible. In season I do elderflower cordial but that's a very short season.

  • When I was in America I drank alot of hm iced tea and loved it - it was basically a pot of tea poured into a jug over ice cubes and the flavoured with either of the following:

juice of two lemons and a little sugar/Splenda
crushed mint imperials (in the pestle and mortar) - dont need to add sugar

I also like iced coffee - I just make up some strong instant decaff and stir it into very cold skimmed milk with a little sweetner and some ice cubes.

Or you could make HM lemonade with lemon juice, sugar and sparkling mineral water - I have to say though that this is quite acidic.

    My kids love smoothies.
Blend together 1 tin of strawberries in juice(cost 34p in Asda or Tesco)
1 or 2 bananas (tastier if they are chopped and frozen first)
    optional extras could be:
tub of natural/flavoured yoghurt -makes it creamier
    any fruit (fresh/tinned)
    milk etc

Just to add to this - I've been told (not tried it yet but planning to at the weekend) that if you add tofu to smoothies, it's like adding really nice ice cream - but obviously loads healthier.
  • Have you tried clove tea just add a few cloves or more if you like to the pot gives the tea a nice flavour.

I make lemonade, but with a twist...in my family its called a swiss lemonade (don't know why...)

Get lemons and limes (depends on how much you want so about 1/person or 2/person), roughly chop them (skin and all), put in a blender with still water (again depending on how many lemons you have, for 4-5 lemons I use 3 pints of water), sugar to taste, ice cubes and blend the lot. Strain it through a sieve and serve. It is frothy and has a really nice colour.

You can also add mint to the blend for a little kick! :)
  • We quite like herbal teas left to go cold - either the bought ones or we love cold mint / lemon balm tea made with our herbs.
