cleaning terracotta jars! help please! :-)

Hello there

I have terracotta tea, coffee and sugar jars that are in need of a good clean. The inside is fine as it has been varnished, but the outsides have become awful. They have grease marks on and as they are porus I don't have a clue what to do, they are really looking rather tatty.
Does anyone have any ideas please.

I have one of those - a utensil jar. Only thing I could think of is get a tiny amount of veg oil on a piece of kitchen roll or an old rag and rub it all over the jar so it is uniformly greased, if you see what I mean. I am not attached to mine so I can always try this for you and report back. I dont think you will get the marks OUT as you say it is porous.

  • What a good idea I didn't think of that, I will give it a go.
I do love them, but they look so tatty they will have to go if I can't get them to look any better.
    Thanks sarahsaver

  • Unfortunately I've never managed to get one of these clean. I had one which I kept my utensils in next to the cooker, and as you can imagine it got really splashed with grease and looked terrible. I hate to throw things away but in the end I gave up trying to clean it and bought a white ceramic one! Sorry!!

I've just won a few on ebay and I can't get them clean - the grease marks stay - anyone had any luck?
    Thanks

just to throw my piece in, i have a slightly porous mug that i put in some sterilising fluid in. well a tablet type thing and some hot water. no idea what it might do to terracotta. maybe worth a go as a last resort.

5 minute soak in soda crystals in hot water followed by 2 minute scrub with neat Fairy = 95% cured.

will continue when I find my rubber gloves

:( don't look so good now they've properly dried out overnight. Anyone? :)

tried everything on google then gave up and painted them - look quite cheerful now in a flowerpot kind of way :)
