do you find it easier to have direct debit's set up or to do the online payments?

hi...I have a mixture of both!

I don't trust the banks not to mess up...so have little faith in the DD system.

Therefore, all my DD's are for small amounts, and are regular and continuous.
    [TV Licence, insurances, etc...]

I have DD's if also 'forced' to.....such as for my broadband/phone package....this check and confirm online every month, to ensure I have transferred enough in the first place..[usually I transfer a few quid over, just on case]..

Anything else was/is on online payment...such as CT....saves me having to watch come the 'free' months.

I set up a standing order for my IPA [NT]...just for the 'basic ' amount requested....any top-ups due to overtime, were made by online payment.
Co-op online payments are very easy....since the site 'saves' regular payments, with ID numbers, acccount no's, etc...

Only hassle was that little blue calculator thingy....

Either way..DD's are useful if you cannot access your accounts on a daily basis...which I do.

Then, if you 'forget'...life doesn't become like pre-BR?

one can have as many Co-op Cashminder accounts as one wishes...I'm not sure how many one needs to open before one gets onto the Co-op's Christmas card list though.

Also, sign up for the Co-op dividend scheme?

I have all my insurances with Co-op..[simplifies matters tremendously].....and still had £25 credited to my account this year....for doing nothing more than I would do normally!

I have two accounts....one for DD's, SO's, rent etc...in other words, all essential outgoings....

the other is for wages, etc...and non-fixed outgoings like food, petrol, and other expenditures.

Whatever is left at the month-end, is saved... Christmas is a-coming?

When my pay hits the first account, I do an online transfer to the second account [plus, pay online bills like CT]....and cease to worry any more about whether I've left enough for that forgotten DD?

How easy was it to open the second account ? It took me an age to convince them I only wanted a basic account ---- would I have to jump through all the hoops again, or will it be 20 question time ??
  • Hi, showed these messages to my hubby,we're going to go and open a 2nd account to "hold" any left over cash-however small and then use the online bit if we need it,great idea, thanks! still waiting for the appointment with the CAB money adviser, wish it'd hurry up !
  • I haven't had my OR interview yet, but when the lady rang me last week to arrange it, she asked me about my bank account, I said I have 2, one Lloyds TSB which my wages go into, and a co-op cashminder which I opened in case Lloyds wouldn't let me keep the account, I was told it's only possible to have one account whislt bankrupt

I think something must have been lost in the translation there?

Perhaps she meant 'one type of account?'

As long as any bank accounts are of the 'basic' kind..ie have absolutely no access to any form of 'credit' [chequebooks, overdraughts, etc]...then a BR person can... effectively, have as many as they want.

Do bear in mind..if the TSB account is a full [cheque book] account, it will close anyway.

Lloyds/TSB are not noted for welcoming BR customers... the Co-op account needs to be the one that wages are paid into...

As an example, both my Cashminder accounts were up and running pre-BR....

I recall explaining their usage to the OR's rep on the initial call....I suppose the OR will be looking for any sort of money-shifting that may have been going on?
