    I think that's really depressing, the thought that 'the state' would get to decide what happens to my children, should they be orphaned, when they already have a family who love them and would want to raise them.

    When my mother was growing up, she had two cousins who were raised by my grandparents when their own mother died (if that makes sense) and my mother has always said that her parents loved them like their own and treated them all equally, to the extent that many people did not know until after my grandparents died that their family were not actually all their own offspring. The authorities were never involved, it was a private family matter. My mother was just remarking recently how this could never happen today. But I suppose that's the world we live in and that's all there is to it.
