Asking for a pay rise

I applied for a job as night manager a few weeks ago and I had an interview however I was rejected - I have worked for the same hotel for over 2 years now on and off in a different departments and have a management degree.

The current night manager is moving to another department, I am working nights on a casual contract because they have never changed my contract but for the last few months I have been working 40-60 hours per week. I helped them out by moving departments because they was very short staffed.

Now my point is, I have to train the new night manager in 2 weeks because my manager would have moved to the other department. I only receive 50p per hour over minimum wage for working nights. I feel that I shouldn't have to be training other managers when I am not a manager myself. The new person whom would be on £2 per hour more than me.

Now in this situation how would one best go about approaching for a pay increase? Only a small amount such as an extra 30-50p per hour.

  • Your not going to get a pay increase. It sounds to me and xorrect me if I'm wrong your a night porter/auditor of the hotel and this is the standard wage; as for the subway thing irrelevant.

You havent got the job accept this and move on; its part of life; I wonder if your attitude is part of the reason you were declined.

You bang on about the person being younger than you and only having management experience in a Subway shop but the reality is that al you have is a bit of paper that says you passed an exam. You have no experience of being a manager and you've just got a lesson that the reality is EXPERIENCE COUNTS OVER A BIT OF PAPER. You don't have an automatic right to a job just because you can wave a certificate. To be blunt, your management skills must be seriously lacking if you've been there 2 years and didn't get the job. Someone with management potential would have demonstrated that even in a non-managerial role.

And yes, Subways do have managers as many are franchises but having a management degree, you should know this surely?
  • And, in the eyes of many, supervisors are managers, a lower rung of the managerial ladder but management nevertheless.
  • I was offered to move to reception a few weeks later so that is why I did not get the position, they wanted me to move to reception. Secondly I have supervisor experience. Thirdly I know that subway operates franchises. I was just going on what someone told me whom works in a subway, and that is the reason for asking. I was told they do not a manager in store instead they have area manager, morning and evening supervisors, and the team members.

Firstly a management degree does not make anyone a good manager and having a degree doesn't automatically entitle anyone to extra money, especially in management where experience is far more relevant.

Secondly the age of the new manager is irrelevant. If the new hotel manager has been constantly taking on more responsibility at Subway or other jobs since working from the age of 16/17/18, moved into a supervisory role and has been able to demonstrate at an interview that they have practical experience supervising and being the most senior person in charge of a Subway store (which sounds like a branch manager to me even if Subway call it a supervisor) then why shouldn't they be appointed to the managerial post? You can be a manager without having the word "manager" in your job title - its fairly common for companies to do this to a) keep salaries lower and b) reduce job title "inflation".

How do you even know they are 19/20 anyway? Lots of people look young for their age - I know 24 year old men that regularly get ID'd in pubs.

Finally I don't really understand why you should get a pay increase. You've agreed to work nights (for hourly uplift) and you agreed to move departments, being "helpful" by moving departments and working nights doesn't entitle you to a pay increase. It sounds like you are paid hourly so you would have got a lot of overtime pay for working 60hrs a week, you can't argue you are out of pocket, so again I can't see why this justifies an increase. Unless you've consistently demonstrating taking on extra responsibilities (slightly more than just training the new manager for 2 weeks - as that is just a one-off) and driving improvements then I don't see why the hotel should increase your pay.

If you want a pay increase then you're going to have to demonstrate why you are worth more money, what are you doing extra that other people wouldn't be doing in your current role?

Obviously you don't know they have franchises nor how a franchise works if the above is your rigid idea of how they do which it seems to be as your answers are indicating. I'd get a refund on your management course as its taught you absolutely nothing about business which is one criteria I'd want anyone I was employing as a manager to have a strong acumen in. What was the pass mark on this degree, 30%? Or was it one of the new breed of "nobody fails" ones?

A franchise can be anything from a one man band running around in a van or single store to a chain. A single store may have a manager and a chain may be structured as above or have general managers in each store but as pointed out to you, supervisors are part of the managing team.

Your responses are starting to indicate why you weren't offered the job.
  • In the OP's defence most Franchisors issue guidelines as to how a store must be run including staffing set ups. Different franchisors have different rules but some of them are incredibly strict. I am not sure how strict the Subway business model is but certianly some franchisors impose incredibly strict trading regulations on the franchisees who buy into their business model.

Your questionn was how to go about getting a pay increase.

Nothing in your current situiation indicates you merit one, from what you have said so

    a) go and get a job on a grad entry scheme where your degree will be valued or
    b) ask your current employer what experience they'd want you to have to get a managerial position with them, and how you can get it. Then ask nicely if they will give you a chaanvce to get the experience.

I would also get the chip off your shoulder, age discrimination's illegal now, and most people are overtaken by younger folk at some point - just came early for you.

I've had 5 managers in my working lifetime, 1 of them was a business management graduate, 3 "company trained" and 1 ex DSG manager - guess which one i wouldn't trust to manage anything!

    I completely agree with this.
You are not a manager, you did not get the managerial position and therefore you should not get the money.

Why they didn't give you the position is the question.

There could be several reasons.. 2 most obvious that jump out:
-They need you where they've got you and are very happy with you there and therefore do not want to give you a position for which they can find suitable person.
-They do not believe you have the necessary skills to be manager for them

Either way, the only way to find out is to leave - once you do have new job offer either they will smell the roses and do anything to keep you, or you will leave and have a job where you actually use your degree.

Just because you have it and you already work for them does not mean that you are their first pick for new job position and you deserve any payrise.
