Self Certification... Help!!

I was involved in an accident last Thursday while at work. Went to the doctors with diagnosed whiplash and he advised me to self certificate for a week. Does the self certificate run 7 days from Thursday, and does it include the weekend? Do my employers pay for that week or generally what happens with regards to my salary. I have never done this before so your help would be most appreciated

Hi, i'm sorry to hear about your accident & hope you're feeling abit better now? Ok, your first week is as you mentioned self certificated, this will include Thursday & from the next Thursday you'll need a sick note from your GP. You can get the self certificate forms from either work or your GP, but my company has never asked me for one. Normally GP's tell you to get one from work & work say the GP, or at least in my experience. Maybe your company won't need one. You'll get Statutory Sick Pay from day 4 of your absense onwards, the first three days are unpaid & called waiting days (Waiting for what I wonder). This is £70.05 a week & paid however you normally recieve your wages. Some companies also pay sick pay, for instance my company pay 8 weeks of occupational sick pay & thats the difference between the £70.05 a week & the normal weekly wage, so it ends up as full pay. There are some who can't claim SSP but I imagine you'd be ok, google Statutory Sick Pay to check, or CAB's website. Look in your contract to find out about any company sick pay or ask work. Sorry to go on so long, some others will be along soon with more knowledge than me i'm sure, I think that's how it works but am no expert! Good luck xx
