Help wanted on buying new PC

To be honest Im a computer dunce! Im great at surfing the net and finding deals (thanks to mse). Im on AOL who I know a lot will say Im paying over the odds but to be honest I have no connection problems and it is quick even on dial up. My problem is I bought my computer three years ago and even then it was recon job. God bless it, it has served more than its purpose but the problem is with modern technology I cant get a lot of things so I am finally going to upgrade!
So...in a nutshell I want to get on the net, Im not a downloader but everything you do nowadays seems to use a lot of memory. Ive got a screen, keyboard, mouse and monitor if that gets a better deal, but I would like to view my pictures off hols (which I cant do now) and perhaps have a DVD rewriter (which Im told I can copy DVDs on).
Any advice and help would be greatly welcomed but not wishing to be rude can you type in understandble words for a computer dummy!
Thanks
