Help Finding Fridge - Microwave - Hoover etc...

Hi,
Me and my girlfriend have just bought a house and have money left to get things like
Microwave, Washing Machine, Fridge-Freezer, Hoover. Basically all the essential Electricals.

just wondered if anyone knows of any cheap companies or refurb places other than the usual Comet/Currys/Argos.

Alternatively if anyone has any discount codes for any of the bigger companies it would be really appreciated.

Thanks

get model no. from comet or other houses then use following to get price down

    http://www.google.co.uk/prdhp?hl=en&tab=wf
    http://www.pricerunner.co.uk/
    http://www.dealtime.co.uk/
    http://www.kelkoo.co.uk/

i bought bosch tall freezer, undercounter fridge, and slimline dishwasher saved £300 against comet prices so dishwasher i got free. plus with bosch if register on there website they give free 2 yr guarantee instead of normal 1yr.

other you got comet clearance http://www.clearance-comet.co.uk/ be careful of there normal selling price as sometimes cheaper or normal comet so double check first.

also got asda and tesco do electricals as well etc

Having now gotten my 4th microwave in 10 years (I use them to destruction- my fault not theirs trust me!) I really think that they are all the same- not just "oh they all cook food and thats all you need" but that I think they are all made by the same factory and are remarkably similar.
Of course there must be some that are not but the models I have had (Goodmans, Panansonic..various other Comet makes) all seem to have identical insides and even fault in the same way and last very similar amounts of time. I would suggest getting the cheapest model you can find with the highest voltage (for speed with cooking) add any features you know you will need (n/b want and need are two different things!) and your sorted.

I bought from Comet and they seem fine with a 1 year warrenty and any faults but I do know John Lewis offer a longer guarentee which is either 2 or 5 years (not sure).

I would also recommend going to your local library to fine past issues of Which magazine which will have non bias reviews on certain brands and also explain any issues with products including within customer services. You can also do a trial online of Which (think its around £1?) but the library is totally free.

If its any help I have a Hotpoint fridge (quiet, decent size and lasts well) I have a Bosch freezer (was a gift so don't know the ins and outs of freezers but really rate this one). I have a Dyson (again a gift but definetly recommend it. I had an Argos £30 model for 4 years and only noticed how bad it was when I bought a handheld rechargeable hoover to deal with sewing threads and fabrics for college, it was actually stronger then the Argos plug-in hoover!). I have a Bosch washing machine, much quieter then my mum's Hotpoint machine which is so loud that two rooms away we have to pause out conversation as its too loud to shout over!). I have Goodmans microwave, was £35 and works just as well as the Panasonic £150 model I used to have 3 years ago (only it doesn't bake or grill- though microwaves will never do as well as what an oven can do IMO).

sorry jennywebb i have a nice little horror story here for hotpoint. my mum and dad just did a new £12,000 kitchen last year. when done had all new appliances delivered from john lewis and there new fridge freezer being a hotpoint at about 3am my old man heard a bang and thought someone had thrown something at the front of the house so got up to go towards front door passing the closed kitchen door (firedoor) where there was a glow coming between the frame and the door very carefully opened it the new fridge freezer behind the door had exploded flames licking the ceiling lucky for him he woke up when he did. as the smoke dectector in the hall never went off due to the firedoor not letting smoke thru for some reason. kitchen seriously smoke damaged insurance company had to pay out for complete new kitchen yet again and all the mess and hassle again of doing a new kitchen the pain in the bum with this one the kitchen had only been finished by about a week.

my advice avoid hotpoint, my parents may just have been unlucky on this occasion. a hotpoint engineer came and took the old appliance away after the following day saying very unusual and hotpoint offered my mum and dad the offer of a free new one wow what an offer bear in mind it could have killed them destroyed £12000 worth of kitchen and live in mess for another while longer.

they also said once the pulled it apart they would let them know what had happened they never did.

end result my mum and dad kindly refused there offer of a new free one and just went out and bought a bosch same as mine and havent looked back since and my mum even said to me should have just bought a bosch in the first place sometimes its better to buy quality in the long run.

and personally for that one incident i will never ever by a hotpoint wouldn't want to risk it, also i find the way hotpoint handled it i find shambolic just seems to me sweep it under the carpet and hopefully everyone will forget it. just a good job my mum and dad have good home insurance or they would have been £12000 out of pocket not to mention could have killed them. i'm sorry going on here but it does truely horrify me hotpoints bevhaviour. as they say buyer beware.

Wow (@Basil) Scary! I got a Hotpoint as it was recommended by the Which magazines at the time. I live in a tiny flat (London!) and when in bed the fridge is less then 5 meters away from my head (I don't sleep in the kitchen, its just a tiny flat). I can't hear it at all so did seem to live up to the claims as well as being easy to clean and lasting a lot lot longer then previous models.

I hope your parents are OK (not too freaked out) by that, hope your OK too- my mum moved into a new built flat when my parents divorced when I was 11. I went to visit one day and found a whopping great burnt hole in the carpet. It turned out the light had spontaneously combusted and dropped to the floor, set the carpet alight...right infront of the door- her only exit. You have no idea how grateful I was to her boyfriend for being the one who woke to the smell apparently just in time! Scared the life out of me, still does!
