  • If anyone you know has apple trees, that they are struggling to keep up with demand, you can help! I've been given a bagful and I'm researching recipes to use them in. I think I found a recipe for a cake/pudding that freezes well so can make a batch and freeze them for another time, which will save the apples going off as well!
Lidl cat food is good, their bread flour is also the best I've used. The two main secrets to keeping grocery shopping down seem to be planning and cooking from scratch!
Shopping in the evening may help, if your shop reduces their produce then, so long as you only buy things you will use!
Buying things like value packs of bacon for about 78p in tesco and making a lovley suet pudding with them is not only very filling but very cheap - I cook mine in my steamer. Toad in the whole as mentioned above is another good one. Black saturns thread is good for ideas and recipes, i make her malt loaf cake using used teabags! I also use value weetabix in them as well. I use cheap cuts of meat and put them in the slo cooker, makes them lovley and soft. If your butcher does those meat packs, it may be worth looking to see whether any are on offer as they get near their date line.
Sainsburys do lamb chops and pork chops in the freezer section - the basics ones, for a couple of £'s, I cook them in gravy in a roasting pan in the over and put the 'roast' potatoes in it as well! the gravy stops them shrinking and makes them nice and soft!
Good luck, hope it goes well - i think you'll do it!

If things get really bad you could always eat the cat and dog.
Only when the last tree has died
and the last river has been poisoned
and the last fish has been caught
will we realise we cannot eat money

:rotfl: my nana refuses to give beggers/homeless people money, instead if their sat with a dog she'll go into a shop and buy them some dog food - her reasoning is "if their that hungry, they'll eat the dog food, if not then atleast the dog gets fed!" :o

    Pet food
there is a post on the other thread about free pet food .I use james wellbeloved because its really great for my pets plus works out cheaper because you dont serve so much, and less vet bills, if you email them they wil send you out free samples .I buy it from my local farm shop which have loads of cheap pet food plus on the james wellbeloved they sometimes have packs with an extra 50% extra.
    HUMAN FOOD TIPS
I now vist my local supermarket at night and they often have their meat reduced to half price which I then take home & freeze. However if they dont have any reduced meat I dont give into temptation to buy anything else as they are too dear for other things and I have to avoid the biscuit row !I am trying the meal planning and always take a list.
I also find that I never shop from just one shop as I have to search two or three to get what I need. although am tempted to buy on line using Tesco codes . I always now use money off coupons in tesco or asda from papers etc as suggested on the discount board and it all builds up. My father in law is an ALDI & Lidl fan and has managed to bring a strapping family up .

If you want a bit of variety in the tortilla chips, put a layer tortillas on a plate, add some jalapeno peppers on top, add another layer of tortilla, and another layer of jalapenos, top with cheddar cheese, and grill till the cheese is melted.
Just be careful not to burn the tortillas.
Its very filling, and a great starter if you have guests.

that sounds nice. often we put a layer of tortillas on plate , then layer of rice , then layer of chilli , then some grated cheese and grill. and then we have a fork each and share from one plate. it is very romantic and scrummy as well.

Just registered so that I can reply to your post.

I'm very interested in what you had to say - is it possible for you to give some idea of what sort of meals you cooked for £13 per week?

    Cheers Mics_chick
