I am getting married in July and at the moment my partner lives with me but pays nothing towards the mortgage/bills (he had debt to clear).
His ex wants to take over the mortgage on their house but cannot get the mortgage on her own so the only other option is to sell. However, The house is about 6k in negative equity and my partner nor I can afford to pick up the bill for this and fees.
If they dont sell and continue with her living in the property and paying the mortgage will i be liable for any defaults once we're married?
This is putting a massive strain on us but we are determined to stick it through. I'm just really worried.

No, only your partner/new husband will be liable. Marrige does not automatically pass over financial commitments.0

But if you currently own your own property, I wouldn't rush to put it in joint names once you're married...0

Keep your finances totaly seperate from your new hubby.
The problem will be him getting a mortgage if needed since the current one with the ex will still be considered.0 -
Thanks for the replies guys. no plans to add his name to my mortgage after we're married.
Hopefully by the time we can afford a house his old place will be long gone.
i feel much better now

If he still has debts you may want to be careful to avoid any financial association (joint accounts etc). To impact future credit applications.0 -
we wont be applying for anything joint until his debts are cleared. thanksLast bet : 26th Oct 2006:j Debt free 25th Feb 2008:j Living "my" dream:T0
