Yorkshire Bank - won't give decision over phone, must go to branch

someone i know is trying to get their currently joint mortgage into his name only after splitting up with his partner.

he rang yorkshire bank this Monday & explained the situation & he was told to fax 3 months wage slips & bank statements. a telephone appointment was made for yesterday in which he was told a decision would be advised.

the bank have now said they can't give a decision over the phone & he needs to make an appointment at a local branch.

just seems odd that they've change their mind in between phone calls? the pessimist in me is thinking they are perhaps going to say no & won't do this on the phone & want him in a branch to go over his options instead?

any insight anyone??

thanks :)

it is not necessarily bad news, I find you get a bit more flexibility and a more accurate application when doing face to face with the building societies than over the phone. It is likely they want to go through the application in a bit more detail to ensure it is right, so I would be doing everything I could to make sure I had the best chance of securing the deal

The cynic in me thinks it is because they know that they have a better chance of cross selling life assurance, Buildings & Contents, Payment Protection etc!!
  • I wouldn't worry. We had to do the same with Nationwide a few years back. I was on a contract while my wife wasn't long in a new job, although we both had good track records. They basically wanted to see if they thought we were suitable, knew how to manage our money etc.

Put on a suit, make an effort and I would think you'll be ok. Don't wear your 'All bankers are scum' t-shirt or take a pit bull on a piece of string with you.
  • thanks for your replies :) (definitely no pit bulls going to the bank, what about a well behaved poodle? :D)

all valid points. i think i'm a bit concerned due to the circumstances on the existing mortgage - it's less than a year old, is 100%, on a new build property & he'll need 4X salary to afford it by himself.

one big worry is the fees that will become due if the current mortgage can't be transferred, £5000, as it's a 2 year fixed rate. but if they do say no to a transfer, it will be a whole new can of worms opened anway...fingers x'd i'm worrying needlessly!
  • Hi new to site forum, would appreciate some help and advice.
I have 3 endowment polices which I took out with Britannic assurance between 1989 – 1992.
I have never been contacted since the mid 90s regards the performance of the policies.
Last month I found out that these policies are now with Phoenix Group.
Having contacted them, I asked why I had never been informed as to the policies performance; they told me they had no postal address for me.
(Have lived-in my property for the last 18yrs)
I have just received the projected policies payout and its shows a big shortfall.
I know it’s my responsibility to meet my mortgage repayment , I have 4 yrs to left and this I will do.
Do I have any grounds for mis- management?
    Regards

@ Dempsey, I suggest you start a new thread rather than piggy-backing on this one about Yorkshire bank mortgages.
