Hi
My tv blew up yesterday..!!(VERY unfortunate since I'd just taken advantage of the cd wow dvd rental offer for 14 days only!!!!!) :P
I've not got loadsamoney to spend BUT was thinking of getting an alternative to the big/unattractive/waste of space that tv's often are now.
I want about a 23 incher, fuss free, quality viewing machine. The lcd ones look v nice and there's no bulk, but was then thinkin about the possibilty of a projector. Have no experience of either, so if anyone could advice what's n where's n spec, that would be great.
Lookin to spend about £700-800 at the most pref.
Cheers folks,
Lol x

I'm not sure which to go for, but I know which one not to choose.
I wouldnt go for a projector.
Firstly they take a while to start + shutdown, due to the warming + cooling process - We could be talking minutes here. Secondly a decent one is gonna be quite alot more money, and thirdly they are pretty loud due to the fans0 -
Definitely would not get a cheap projector.0

Well for a start, remember that a 21 inch LCD is roughly equivalent to a 23 inch CRT in terms of viewable screen area, so compare like with like when you're searching.
I got my 20 inch LCD from Currys for £500 a few months ago and find that it's a good size for use in my living room but your requirements might be different.
Anyway, the model I got is no longer available but that's a ballpark figure at least.0 -
Hi,
23" Philips are very tasty
2 models available, 23PF9945 (seen at £999) and 23PF9946 I believe is the slightly newer version of it, or 26" versions also exist
I did a lot of research into both of these as I was considering one of them, but still have not decided as I may now consider the 26" !
Not fair! Cant decide. Good luck!Beware Lego Men with Deep pockets...! :cool:0 -
thanks for your views guys
I've had a rethink after viewing a few in the shops. I still think they are massively overpriced (the LCD"s) and are bound to come down in a year or so, and since I'm essentially impulse buying (NEEDING tv as opposed to just shopping) I think I'm best buying a cheap as I can get bulky one to have for a couple a years, by which time I'll have researched some more AND the price will have bound to have come down. All in all being less of a gamble.
So now I'm on the look out for the best deal I can get on a reasonable 20-28" tv if anyones got any advice on best buys. By the way, since I just discovered my town DOES recieve freeview signal (having previously been told it doesn't) I am getting a sony one top box. Does this affect what tv I have to buy? (Like, are they fine with any tv)
Sorry if that is a silly question, I'm really new to digital set top boxes.0 -
Freeview boxes will work with any TV.
Whether your aerial will need upgrading or not will only be determined once you try it.
If it looks fine, then it'll be fine.
If you get all sorts of picture/sound break-up/pixellation (blocky 'things' on screen) then you'll need a better aerial.
With regard to TV's.
A rule of thumb is that high-end conventional style TV still beats the hell out of a low-end plasma/LCD.
They are still a bit style over function in my book.
If you want something to keep you going until the technology improves/changes (HDTV is coming) then you won't want to spend a lot.
Good 50hz TV's don't cost a lot and the pictures still beat a lot of much more expensive 100hz stuff.
Unbeatable.co.uk are doing a helluva deal on the TV I currently own.
It's the JVC AV28R4 and they're doing it with a JVC DVD player for £407 !
That TV won best-buy awards in magazines only a year ago.
Great picture, good looks, and built in dolby surround sound.
To get proper surround sound you could buy the optional JVC SPR100 rear speakers which you would situate either side of the settee you sit on.These are £40.Plug those into the back of the TV and duck as the bullets fly !!!! ;D0 -
Definitely for your budget stick with a large crt.
Lcd prices are dropping nicely at the moment and I would expect more price drops in the run up to Christmas.

The 32" Tosh for £719 is a bargain imo. Might be a bit big for your needs tho.

My advice would be to buy the absolute cheapest CRT TV now with a 1 year warranty. If its more than £150 the use Barclaycard to get a 2nd year free (check with them before buying it!).
If it lasts a year or two then the CRT/plasma screens will be cheap by then. I see that macro has some pretty outstanding offers on LCD at the moment. 27" LCD for £799 next week ... or something very similar to that.
When you are going to buy an LCD - try to have a look at some of them together. I got a Beko from Argos when it was in the sale. What a piece of junk - horrible picture. Returned it after 1 day. Haven't bothered since .... waiting for prices to drop.0
