help with playing dvd's on pc

i have always been able to play dvd's through my pc, however recently i keep getting this message when i try to play it through windows media player

C00D1163: A problem occurred with digital copyright protection
A troubleshooter is available to help you solve this problem. To troubleshoot the problem, see the "I receive a message about digital copy protection" option in the DVD Troubleshooter in Windows Help.

Note

To play DVDs, you must have a DVD-ROM drive and a software or hardware DVD decoder installed on your computer.

i have powerdvd and nero and it wont play using those applications either, when i go through the troubleshoot it just ends up trying to sell me some programs. it seems really odd that this has only just started to happen.

can anyone give me some advice, preferbly in laymans terms!

thanks in advance
