Office Closure. Job is relocating to different office

I suspect the office where I work is closing, and my job is relocating to a different office. It's an additional 25 miles, and approximately 45 minutes additional commute (one way). Does anyone have any experience on what to expect from large corporates in terms of relocation allowances to cover additional costs of mileage and additional commuting time. It's going to be an additional 1000 miles a month, so it's not a trivial amount to me. Thanks

    Large corporates vary from the extremely generous to the exceedingly stingy.

    I would expect a large corporate to have covered something like this in their handbook, or terms or whatever your company has. Our company isn't huge, but the conditons of employment does state that they can move our place of work to another location within 50 miles of the current location, with no extra payments to allow for extra travelling etc. I would check if your copany has something in writing that covers relocation.

    Even with relocation/mobility clauses redundancy can still be an option if the relocation is not practical for an individual.

    Time to dig out the company policies and consider the options.

    True, but I'd be surprised if you could argue that another 25 miles / 45 minutes was impractical.
    Time to dig out the company policies and consider the options.
    Absolutely. If there's a clause about being able to relocate you by up to 50 miles, then you're stuffed, IMO.

    My company has recently moved our local office to one 24 miles away. They pay 14.4 ppm for the difference between what we used to travel to what we now have to travel. That's 14.4 x 22 (miles) x twice a day. Nothing extra is paid for the extra hour a day travelling. This will be for three years then nothing.

    That's approximately £1500 a year towards additional fuel costs (assuming 5 weeks holiday). For 3 years that seems o.k. and a good gesture by the company.

    I'd be more than happy with that amount.

    Someone with child/elderly care commitments could find this move impractical.

    Increased costs relative to pay would be a good reason.

    individuals may have other reason that make it impractical for them.

    Other factors like seniority can make the case stronger the other way.

    Have they negotiated with the HMRC to cover the tax/NI or are you going to get a shock when the P11d turns up?

    Although this is what the company pay, I don't drive so have to get a lift in with my son who works near to my new office. I can claim 2ppm for the difference from where he works to where he drops me (and give the money to him). That's about 32p a day. Hmmmm, don't think I'll be bothering!

    If another member of staff (who is eligible for the relocation mileage) gives me a lift they can claim the 14ppm plus an extra 2ppm from my house to the office.

    So tax and NI won't be an issue for me!

    Learn to drive quick and claim the money.
