i then take the reserved fresh starter out of the freezer and leave to defrost. but it is always runny and when i try to make yogurt with it, it really doesn't work

i make thick yogurt adding dried milk powder, but even adding LOTS of milk powder doesn't help!
any suggestions? or ideas where it is going wrong? !!
( i use a lakeland yogurt maker )

i have been freezing the other half of the tub of yogurt i buy to make my yogurt. having used the first bit to make big tub of yogurt, i then use some of THIS yogurt to make the next batch and so on, for 3/4/5 yogurts depending on how fast they get eaten!

Do you freeze the yogurt when it's still fresh?
